Dear Redwood City Neighbors,

I love serving my neighbors, my community, and the City of Redwood City as a member of the City Council.  My public service began 20 years ago when I was appointed to the Architectural Review Committee in 1998, continued through four years on the Planning Commission, and the past eight years on the City Council, including serving as both Vice Mayor and Mayor.

But after 20 years of serving my community, I have decided to step back from elected office and not seek re-election to the City Council this November.

I have not made this decision lightly, but as I continued to reflect upon my accomplishments, goals, and the continued sacrifices I would make at the expense of my family and my career to keep all the balls in the air – I concluded that it is time to allow the next generation of leaders to serve on the City Council and bring a younger perspective to our great City.

I hope you understand that serving on the City Council is the ultimate privilege and honor, but the time commitment goes way beyond just attending two meetings a month.  It involves much more.  Committee meetings, board meetings, regional appointments such as Caltrain and Samtrans Boards, conversations with community members, attending events, speaking engagements, making presentations, and more.  Some weeks, this can easily be another 20 to– 40 hours a week in addition to a full-time job.

With interest in growing my business unit at work, including new initiatives and international expansion, a desire to spend more time with my family and for myself, and the many meetings, there is not enough time to do this all well.  The time has come for me to trust the future of our great City with new leadership.

I want to thank my City Council colleagues, friends and supporters that have stood with me during my entire time serving the community.  A lot has been accomplished, and yet, more needs to be done.  I am hopeful that our future City Councils will continue the work on housing, infrastructure and regional transportation – Redwood City does not stand alone as an island.  Having worked on regional transportation issues for several years, one of the most painful lessons learned is to never stop planning.

While I am stepping away from City Council, I will not be far away.  I will still be advocating for construction of the improvements to the Bayfront Canal neighborhoods, lending my voice to find funding for 101/Woodside Road, and hopefully will be there with my father for the ribbon cutting of the electrification of Caltrain – nearly 50 years later after his service at Caltrain.

Thank you in advance for your support and understanding and please take the time to vote and support candidates in the upcoming November election in Redwood City.

I love Redwood City and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in so many roles and those that are yet to come.

My best to all,

Jeff
